David Ashworth has 50 years experience within the Brass Band movement. and is available as a Freelance Brass Band Conductor and also is available for intensive teaching and band training anywhere within the United Kingdom. As an experienced Musical Director and Adjudicator, he is in very popular demand throughout the year, especially from Lower Section Bands, to assist conductors in Contest Test Piece preparation, at which he has become somewhat of a specialist.



Personal Information and Experience.

David started playing Tenor Horn in 1959, at the age of 8yrs, with Bury Silver Band, then a Second Section band, with his father Leslie and two brothers, John and Bob.
He took lessons and instruction from Hugh Parry, then Musical Director of the famous Wingates Temperance Band.

David has always been very active within the Brass Band Movement. He started Conducting in 1978 but over the past 48 years, he played with, and Conducted, numerous bands in England of all sections, including;

British Aerospace (Chadderton) Band, (Championship Section)
Riddings Band (Notts), (Championship Section)
St Austell Band, (Championship Section)
Marsden Band,(1st Section)
Boarshurst (Greenfield) Band,(2nd Section)
Hawk Green (Marple), (1st Section)
Walkden Band, (2nd Section)
BMP Europe Goodshaw Band, (3rd Section)
and The Hoover Bolton Band, (1st Section)
The Golborne Band, (4th Section)
to name just a few.

He was a serving Officer with the Lancashire Constabulary and the Greater Manchester Police Forces, before retiring in October 1987.

In January 1998, David was approached by, the committee of the British Aerospace (Chadderton) Band. (Championship Section) and became, the bands Musical Director. A position he gladly accepted, taking the band to a winning performance on their second outing.

In 2001, under his direction, Hawk Green (Marple) Band gained promotion to the 1st Section. After coming 3rd in the North West Area Contest at Blackpool.

David is still in great demand to conduct Brass Bands of all sections and has recently obtained prizes in numerous contests with the BMP Europe Goodshaw Band.

He has a fine reputation, confirmed
by 4 bars rest as,

David also won the Conductors Trophy.



He is also the Founder and Musical Director of the CANCER RESEARCH BAND, which is made up of numerous very well known and famous brass band personalities. Over the past 5 years, the band consisted of players from Richardson Fodens Band, Hepworth (Persimmon Homes) Band, Leyland Band, Wingates Band, Boarshurst Silver Band, Dobcross Silver, Oldham Band (Lees), BT Band and BMP Europe Goodshaw Band.

Over a period of five years, the band has contributed a total exceeding £4500-00 to the Cancer Research Charity. Money which has been either won at March Contests or collected at the various Concerts that the band have performed at.

David is also an experienced adjudicator, both in choral music and brass band music. He adjudicated at the 1999 and 2002 C.I.S.W.O. National Mineworkers Contest at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool, the 2002 Rhyl Music Festival and for the past 8 years, he has adjudicated at the O.M.B.B.A. Slow Melody Contest.

He regularly adjudicates, throughout the country at many different Brass Band and Choral Contests.

He served as the National Public Relations Officer with the National Association of Brass Band Conductors from 2000 to 2005 and served on the National Executive Committee..

David also teaches brass, and in the past has had several students who have moved up the ladder to the higher sections of the Brass Band movement.
Nicola Murray, for example, moved from Principal Cornet at BMP Europe Goodshaw Band to the Repiano seat at the YBS Band in 2007.

David is available, as a Freelance Conductor, anywhere within the United Kingdom, and is in popular demand throughout the year, especially from Lower Section Bands, as a specialist in Contest Test Piece preparation.
